Soap Box Derby

Augusta County BPW sponsored a stock car in the Blue Ridge Soap Box Derby on May 16, 1998 in Waynesboro, VA. Karen "Sissy" Meadows was our driver for this year. The Blue Ridge Soap Box Derby is one of the largest derby races in the country. The Soap Box Derby is a youth racing program which has run nationally since 1934.

The Stock division is designed to give the first time builder a learning experience. Boys and girls, 9 through 16 compete on simplified cars built from purchased kits. These kits assist the Derby novice by providing a step-by-step layout for construction of a basic lean forward style car.

The goals of the Soap Box Derby program are to teach youngsters some of the basic skills of workmanship, the spirit of competition and the perseverance to continue a project once it has begun.

Augusta County BPW hopes to mentor young people in our community through our sponsorship of a Soap Box Derby car.
